Description
Tregragon Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with extensions added in the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a steeply pitched, cement-washed rag slate roof with gable ends and rendered brick stacks. The rear wing is also made of stone rubble and has a slate roof, with a gable end to the rear on the north side and a hipped end where it joins the main range on the south side. A large rendered stone rubble end stack includes a projection for a cloam oven.
The layout of the house consists of a two-room and cross passage range at the front, with a wing extending to the rear right, creating an overall 'L' shaped plan. The rear wing is likely the earlier part of the house, originally designed with a two-room and cross passage plan. The right-hand room on the north side is heated by an end stack and features a large cloam oven, while the smaller left-hand room on the south side appears to be unheated. In the early to mid 18th century, the house was extended, possibly to create separate accommodation, adding a two-room and cross passage plan at right angles to the lower left-hand end of the earlier structure. In the early 19th century, a dairy was added as an outshot to the rear of the right-hand room of the later range.
The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high with an almost symmetrical three-window front facing south. It features two 20th-century two-light casements on the ground floor, along with a 20th-century part-glazed porch, and three late 19th-century six-pane sash windows on the first floor.
Inside, the early to mid 18th-century range includes a framed stair opposite the entrance, featuring a mid 19th-century newel post and a circa 18th-century deep handrail on the left. The right-hand room has a circa early 18th-century three-panel door with raised and fielded panels, while the left-hand room contains a mid 19th-century chimney-piece. The first floor has a circa early 18th-century door leading to a cupboard in the right-hand room. The roof structure from the early to mid 18th century features principals that are partly halved, lap-jointed, and pegged at the apices. The late 17th-century range in the rear wing has a roughly chamfered timber lintel over the fireplace, which includes a large cloam oven projection, although the cloam lining has decayed and been removed. The roof structure from this period is circa 19th century.
