Description

Trewennan is a house dating to the early 17th century or possibly earlier. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble, with an asbestos slate roof, half-hipped at one end and gabled at the other. A gabled, two-storey porch is located on the left, and there are stone rubble stacks on the right end and to the rear right of the hall.

The original layout is uncertain, but it seems to have been a two-room and through-passage plan, built along a slope. A wide through passage runs to the left of centre, with a large hall to the right, which was likely heated by a rear stack. A chamber above the hall was probably heated by the gable end stack. A smaller, likely service room, is located to the left. Around the 18th century, a staircase was probably added in a projection at the rear of the passage; this was replaced in the 19th century by a dog-leg staircase. In the 19th century, the service range was extended with a one-room plan wing to the rear left. A lean-to outshut with a catslide roof at the rear of the hall is likely from the 18th century and has an ovolo moulded timber lintel above a blocked door, now a window.

The front is asymmetrical with four windows, and has been altered in the late 20th century. The porch has a granite, chamfered segmental arch with a hood mould and carved spandrels above a 20th-century PVC window. The left-hand end has 20th-century PVC windows on both ground and first floors. The hall originally featured a wide mullioned window with a slate string, now replaced with a wide three-light PVC window. There are also two 20th-century PVC windows above. The rear outshut has a catslide roof.

The interior was inaccessible during the 1986 survey, but it may contain interesting features and help to more accurately determine the house's age.
