Description
This is a disused house, which was once two cottages, dating from the early 18th century. It is built of rendered cob on stone with a wooden shingle roof that is gabled at both ends and was formerly thatched. The left gable end is covered with wooden shingles. A large central stone chimney stack is located on the ridge. The left-hand wall features massive unworked pieces of stone. The house has a single depth plan with two rooms heated by the central stack and stands two storeys high. The symmetrical front has two windows on the first floor, with no windows at the rear. There are plank front doors on both the left and right sides. The first floor has two three-light casement windows, each with three panes per light, under timber lintels and with slate sills. Inside, there are two large fireplaces with timber lintels and cloam ovens, as well as a stone floor. The interior features two large unhewn cross beams and exposed axial beams. The roof has pegged collar rafters beneath a 20th-century roof. Blocked openings at the rear indicate that the house may have been used as a shippon at one time. The wooden shingles date from around 1940, and the house remains unmodernized.
