Description

Galford Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the front colourwashed and rendered, and features a thatched roof with gables at both ends. There is a large stone chimney stack at the right gable end. The layout consists of two rooms with a through passage and a rear left stair projection. A rear outshut, covered by a slate lean-to roof, was likely added in the 19th century. The cottage has two storeys and a symmetrical two-window front, which includes a central stone porch topped with a conical thatched roof. The ground floor has two 20th-century casement windows, while the first floor features two 19th-century two-light casement windows, each with four panes per light. There is a small square stair light in the stair projection, and one rear window is a raking dormer that rises slightly above the eavesline.

Inside, the through passage plan remains intact. The left-hand room contains a large fireplace with a cloam oven, and the chamfered fireplace beam, which has one straight cut stop, may have been re-sited. Exposed ceiling beams are present throughout the ground floor. A 19th-century staircase is located in the projection. Large principal beams are visible in the first-floor rooms, but access to the roof space was not available during the survey in 1985.
