Description
SX 48 NE LEW TRENCHARD
4/89 Nos 1 and 2 Wye Cottages - II
Pair of houses. Circa 1890, designed by Sabine Baring-Gould. Stone rubble with some slate-hanging to first floor, sprocketted slate roofs gabled to the front, brick stacks. 2 houses designed as 1 symmetrical unit and characteristic of Sabine Baring Gould's architectural style in the parish. 2 storeys and attic 1- + 2- + 1-window front with front left and right projections gabled to the front. A slate canopy between the projections forms the porch, front doors under rectangular fanlight reached by 2 flights of steps. 2 first floor windows in centre, each a 2-light casement, 4 panes per light. The front projections have tiers of ornamental slate-hanging carried out over moulded bressumers. 2 ground floor windows, each a 4-light casement 6 pane per light. 2 first floor canted oriels carried out on a single timber bracket. The oriels are 4-light casements, 6 panes per light. A 1-light attic window above each oriel. Interior not inspected. Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was both parson and squire of Lew Trenchard from 1881 until his death. He financed and designed a number of new houses in the parish and considered the rebuilding of some of the old cottages a duty. He acted as his own architect and used local materials and local craftsmen. Wye cottages are very unaltered and the best of Baring-Gould's cottages in the parish.
