Description

Wye Cottages is a pair of houses built around 1890, designed by Sabine Baring-Gould. The cottages are constructed from stone rubble, with some slate-hanging on the first floor, and feature sprocketted slate roofs that are gabled at the front, along with brick stacks. They are designed as a symmetrical unit, typical of Baring-Gould's architectural style in the parish.

The buildings are two storeys high with an attic and have a front that includes one window on the left and two on the right, with gabled projections at both ends. A slate canopy between these projections forms a porch, with front doors located beneath rectangular fanlights, accessible by two flights of steps. There are two first-floor windows in the center, each a 2-light casement with four panes per light. The front projections feature ornamental slate-hanging above moulded bressumers.

On the ground floor, there are two windows, each a 4-light casement with six panes per light. The first floor also includes two canted oriel windows, supported by a single timber bracket, each being a 4-light casement with six panes per light. Above each oriel is a 1-light attic window. The interior has not been inspected.

Sabine Baring-Gould, who lived from 1834 to 1924, was both the parson and squire of Lew Trenchard from 1881 until his death. He financed and designed several new houses in the parish and felt it was his duty to rebuild some of the old cottages. Acting as his own architect, he utilized local materials and craftsmen. Wye Cottages remain largely unaltered and are considered the finest example of Baring-Gould's cottages in the parish.
