Description

A pair of headstones located about 9 metres southwest of the nave of the Church of St Andrew, likely dating from the early 19th century, are made of slate. These square-headed headstones do not have names or dates but feature long verses. The southern stone is bordered and includes an inscription from a deceased woman to her family, saying: "Pray be cool, do not lament/All must submit you see/When God doth please your life to call/Come here and sleep by me." The northern headstone has quarter suns carved in each corner and contains a verse that eulogises a deceased man, stating, "Now like the sun set in eclipse he lies/And like the sun is soon again to rise." This tradition of headstones with verses lacking names or dates is also seen at St Giles in the Wood, the nearby parish, with the earliest examples likely dating from the 18th century.
