YARNSCOMBE YARNSCOMBE Pair of headstones about 9 metres south west of the nave of the Church of St Andrew

GV II

Pair of headstones or footstones. Probably early C19. Slate. Pair of square-headed headstones without dates or names but inscribed with long verses. The southern stone has a border, the verse written as from a dead women to her family: ... "Pray be cool, do not lament/All must submit you see/When God doth please your life to call/Come here and sleep by me". The northern headstone has quarter suns cut in each corner and the verse eulogises a dead man, including "Now like the sun set in eclipse he lies/And like the sun is soon again to rise". The tradition of stones with verses with neither name nor date is also found at St Giles in the Wood, the neighbouring parish. The earliest examples are probably C18.
