Description

ST GILES ST GILES IN THE WOOD SS 53 18 IN THE WOOD 18/241 Pair of adjacent anonymous head- - stones approximately 34 metres south-south-west of the tower of the Church of St Giles

GV II

Pair of anonymous headstones. Undated, probably late C18. Both are slate. They stand side by side. The left one is square-headed standing approximately 500 millimetres high. The right one is nowy-headed and stands approximately 650 millimetres high. Both are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. Both are poetic epitaphs with no name or date included. The left headstone inscription is addressed to parents and suggests it commemorates the death of more than one infant. By contrast the right headstone inscription speaks of an old person, "near ninety years" and is addressed to their "children's children's children". Both stones have been moved to here.
