Description
Glebe Cottage is a small house, likely built in the 18th century. It features cob on stone rubble footings, with the cob rendered. The thatched roof has a plain ridge and gabled ends, with stacks at both ends. The layout consists of a single-depth main range that is two rooms wide, with an approximately central entrance into the right-hand room, which is likely the parlour. An enclosed stair is situated between the two rooms, providing access from the parlour, while the kitchen is located to the left. There is a rear left outshut, currently used as the kitchen, which may have originally served as a dairy.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical three-bay front, featuring a 19th-century gabled porch at the centre. The first floor has three two-light 20th-century casement windows with square leaded panes. On the ground floor, there are two similar casement windows on the left and right, both with brick segmental arches. To the left of the porch, there is a small one-light window with a brick lintel that lights the stair.
Inside, both fireplaces have splayed jambs, bread ovens, and rough-chamfered lintels. The axial beams in both rooms are likely replacements, and the closely-spaced joists, now exposed, were probably originally covered with plaster. The roof, which was not inspected, is reported to have pegged A frames with additional later support. Glebe Cottage is an attractive traditional house located on the lane leading to Ley Marden, the former rectory, and has group value with the adjacent barn.
