Description

This headstone, located about 10 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Andrew, is likely from the early 19th century. Made of slate, it features a shouldered, round-headed design with a well-cut border and arabesques at the top. The headstone is inscribed with a lengthy verse, which expresses a message from deceased parents to their children, urging them not to mourn and to live in love and fear of God. The verse concludes with a promise of everlasting joy in Heaven. This tradition of using stones with verses that lack names and dates is also seen in the nearby parish of St Giles in the Wood, with the earliest examples dating back to the 18th century.
