Description
The Down memorial, located about 28 meters northeast of the northeast corner of the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas, dates from around 1914. It is made of iron and features a frame with a triangular head. Below the triangular head is an inscription panel, which is topped by a decorative wrought iron cross that contains a three-dimensional iron bell at its center. The inscription honors James and Gertrude Down, who died in 1913 and 1914. The triangular head is adorned with iron cusps, and the arms and head of the cross finish with fleur de lis. This memorial is noted for its unusual design and use of materials.
