Description
The Alfold War Memorial, dating from around 1920, is a granite structure situated on a concrete-covered base in the graveyard, approximately 5 meters east of and aligned with the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas.
The memorial features a Celtic cross that rises from an inscribed plinth, which is supported by a three-stepped square base. The cross is roughly-hewn and includes a sword of sacrifice moulded on the shaft, with the hilt positioned at the crossbar. The plinth has a polished front face, inscribed with applied lead lettering that reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF / THOSE FROM THIS PARISH / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918’, followed by the names of 16 fallen soldiers. Below this, a sloping tablet is inscribed with ‘1939-1945’, listing the names of five men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
