Description
The Walter headstone, located about 15 meters northeast of the northeast corner of the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas, is a late 19th-century memorial. It is made of slate and features a segmental head. The headstone commemorates James Walter, who died in 1796. The back of the headstone is signed "cut by W Deacon, Milton Abbot." It includes a monogram at the top and a verse below the inscription, which has rustic spelling and punctuation: "When Christ shall come to rise the dead/And soul; to body join:/Thousands will wish, there time on earth;/Had been so short as mine."
