Description

Town Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse with alterations dating to the late 18th and early 19th century, and 20th-century replacement windows. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, with a slate roof and gable end stacks; one stack projects to the right, and there is an axial stone stack. The original plan consisted of three rooms and a through passage, with the hall heated by a stack backing onto the passage and the lower end and inner rooms also heated. A rear outshut is likely an 18th-century addition, and the hall has been extended to the front with a short projection featuring two gabled fronts. The front was refenestrated in the late 18th and early 19th century, and the windows were replaced with copies in the late 20th century. A pantry was created in the late 20th century by blocking off the rear of the passage. The house is two storeys high and has a six-window asymmetrical range with regular window placement. A 19th-century front door is centrally located, leading into the passage, while the hall projection with its two gabled fronts is to the right. The front elevation features sash windows with glazing bars. The front portion of the passage remains, and the lower end has exposed joists and a large fireplace with a plain timber lintel and stone rubble jambs. Two first-floor rooms are said to have barrel ceilings, likely dating to the early 18th century. Early features may be concealed elsewhere in the house. Town Farm contributes significantly to the village centre.
