Description

Kerslake headstone, located about 20 meters southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas, is a late 19th-century headstone signed by R. Miller from Lifton. Made of slate, it features a shouldered design with an octagonal head, commemorating William Kerslake, who died in 1869. The headstone has a sailing ship carved in deep relief within a roundel at the top, accompanied by a verse below the inscription that reads: "The Lord did on my side engage/From Heav'n his throne my cause upheld/And snatch'd me from the furious race/Of threat'ning waves that proudly swell'd." This headstone showcases unusually elaborate slate-carving for the region.
