Description

17 and 18 The Strand are a pair of houses dating from the early 19th century, which were restored in 1990. They have solid rendered fronts and slate roofs, with two rendered chimneys on the left gable wall and one visible on the front slope of the right gable wall. Each house has a double-depth plan and is one room wide, standing three storeys tall with a three-window range, although the middle windows are blind.

At the center of the ground storey, there are paired doors beneath a single doorcase featuring pilasters and an entablature. The doors are four-panelled with panelled reveals. The windows have moulded architraves, except for those on the left side of each storey of No 17, which have flat architraves. Most windows are six-paned sashes, except for the ground-storey and lower second-storey windows at No 17, which are plain. The entire front is flanked by giant Ionic pilasters, each topped with a section of architrave and frieze, and there is a boxed eaves cornice running across the front. A raised band is present at first-floor level, and there is a seven-paned round-arched stair window with margin panes in the left side wall.

The interior of No 18 features a wooden staircase with a very narrow open well, thin square balusters, cut strings, and column newels. The ground and first-floor front rooms have richly decorated ceiling bands, and the first-floor rooms also include a large enriched chandelier boss.
