Description

The Appledore Inn is a public house located on Chingswell Street in Bideford. It dates from the early to mid 19th century, with possible earlier origins. The ground floor was refenestrated in the late 19th or early 20th century. The building features a solid rendered front and a slate roof, with a red-brick chimney on the front slope at the left end and an old red-brick chimney with a raised band at the top on the right party wall, likely shared with No. 19.

The inn is two storeys tall and has a slightly asymmetrical three-window front. The doorway has replaced the middle ground-storey window and features a bead-moulded surround with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets, which has 'cotton reel' moulding on its underside. The entrance has a six-panelled door, with the two lowest panels flush, and includes an old letterbox and brass knocker, set on a grey stone doorstep.

The ground-storey windows consist of three lights to the left and four to the right. Each mullion is supported by a turned baluster that holds up shaped brackets leading to the window-head. The lights contain six-paned wood casements, with a round pane cutting into the four upper panes. The upper-storey windows have eight-paned sashes in recessed box-frames, with the middle window set well off-centre to the right. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records indicate that there was an Appledore Inn in Chingswell Street in 1878, with Henry Jenkins as the landlord.
