Description
19 The Strand is a terrace house from the early 19th century that was restored in 1990. It features a solid rendered front with horizontal channelling on the ground storey. The roof is slate and hipped to the left, with a rendered chimney on the right side wall. The building has three storeys and a semi-basement, with a two-window range. The ground storey has a window and doorway slightly offset to the right of the openings above. The window on the ground storey has had the lower part of its jambs splayed at some point. The doorway is round-headed and has a six-panelled door, with the bottom two panels flush with matching reveals. The windows throughout the building are barred sashes, all with horns: there are four over four panes in the basement, eight over eight panes in the ground storey, four over four panes with margin-panes in the second storey, and two over two panes in the third storey. A balcony with patterned iron railing is present in the second storey, and there is a prominent boxed eaves cornice.
The interior has been significantly altered, but a geometrical wooden staircase remains from the first floor upwards, featuring thin square balusters, shaped step-ends, and a rounded left-hand end to the stair compartment. The first-floor front room includes a reeded white marble chimneypiece with a Gothic iron grate and an enriched ceiling-band, although the band is missing along the front wall. The channelling and cornice extend from No. 20, although there is a distinct break in the cornice. The balcony design is almost identical to that of No. 20.
