Description
The sewer ventilation pipe, located on the street corner adjacent to No 13, dates from around 1900. This tall iron pipe is designed to resemble a Classical column, featuring a pedestal, a moulded base, and an enriched capital. Halfway up the pipe, there is a moulded band that conceals a joint. Above the capital, an ornate arrow points southeast to indicate the direction of the sewer. At the top, there is a ball with open lugs facing in all four directions, which is surmounted by a tall finial encircled with a coronet. Although there is no maker's name on this pipe, a similar one located at the west end of the High Street is inscribed 'W. MACFARLANE & CO. GLASGOW'. Identical pipes were likely installed when the East-the-Water sewers were relaid in 1901-1902.
