Description
The sewer ventilation pipe, located at the northwest corner of 1-1A Barnstaple Street, was likely constructed between 1901 and 1902. The engineer for this project was Baldwin Latham from Parliament Mansions in Westminster, and the contractor was E Ellis from Bideford. This tall, cylindrical iron pipe is designed to resemble a tapering Gothic shaft, complete with a pedestal, moulded base, and foliated capital. About halfway up the shaft, there is a projecting moulded band that conceals a joint. At the top, the shaft features an arrow indicating the direction of the sewer, above which is a ball with open lugs facing in all four directions, finished with a tall finial encircled by a coronet. The shaft is moulded with the maker's name; while the upper part is illegible, the visible portion reads "GLASGOW. SARACEN FOUNDRY." This pipe is identical to another located at the opposite end of East-the-Water in Torrington Street, and both likely date from the same sewer re-laying project that included the installation of ventilators.
