Description
The entrance range to Bideford and Torridge Hospital, originally built as a workhouse, dates from 1837 to 1839. It features solid rendered walls and a hipped slate roof. The building is oriented parallel to the street but is set back behind a forecourt. In the center, there is a covered carriage entrance, flanked by two long, lower wings with cross-wings at each end. These cross-wings have short projections at the front and longer ones at the rear.
The entrance has a single-storey design, highlighted by a tall round-arched carriage gate with horizontally-channelled piers, a moulded archivolt with a keystone, and a triangular pediment. Each side wing has five openings on the left and four on the right. The three openings on the left and the two end openings on the right are set in short projections. All openings are round-headed with moulded archivolts that spring from moulded imposts. Most contain sash windows with glazing bars, although the lower sashes in the three left-hand windows have been modified to have two panes instead of six. The door is four-panelled, with the top two panels now glazed, and features a fanlight with radial bars. Each section of the wings is flanked by strips of horizontal channelling, and there is a boxed eaves cornice. The interior has been significantly altered.
