Description

Strawberry Cottage is a Grade II listed building, formerly two cottages, likely dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The thatched roof has a five-room plan and faces southeast. The left end room, which is unheated, was remembered by older parish residents as having been used as a shop. An axial stack is located between the next two rooms, while the room to the right of center has an axial stack that backs onto the right end room, which has a projecting gable-end stack. The cottage was formed by joining two former cottages and is two storeys high.

The exterior displays irregular front fenestration with six ground floor windows and four first floor windows, all of which are 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars. There are two front doorways, one near each end, both featuring early 20th-century part-glazed plank doors behind contemporary gabled porches with trellis sides. The right door and porch are now enclosed within a 20th-century conservatory. The left end corner has 20th-century brick quoins. The roof is half-hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right.

Inside, the only exposed carpentry is a roughly-finished crossbeam of indeterminate date over the partition between the left two rooms. The roof has not been inspected. Strawberry Cottage is part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the hamlet of Kingscott.
