Description

Phillishayes Cottage is a Grade II listed building, originally two smaller cottages, likely built in the mid to late 17th century. It underwent significant refurbishment and rearrangement in the mid to late 19th century when it was divided into two cottages, and was later reunited into a single house around 1970. The cottage is constructed of plastered local stone rubble, with some cob in the rear wall, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, all beneath a thatched roof.

The building has a three-room plan and faces southwest, backing onto the lane and built down the hillslope. At the left (northwest) end is an unheated room that is now used as the kitchen, with most of the partition between this room and the center room removed. The center and right rooms contain an axial stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces. While the house largely reflects the mid to late 19th-century refurbishment, the stack and outer walls appear to be older. It may have originally been built as two cottages, but it is more likely that it was designed as a small lobby entrance three-room plan house, with the right room serving as a parlour, the middle room as a kitchen, and the left room as a dairy or buttery.

The exterior features a three-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. The two former cottage front doorways remain, but both now contain 20th-century doors. The main roof is half-hipped at each end, and the rear wall is blind. Inside, the cottage has plain 19th and 20th-century carpentry details. The fireplace in the center room was rebuilt in the 19th century, while the fireplace in the right room retains its 17th-century character, featuring an oak-framed front, although the two posts have been replaced in the 20th century.
