Description

Fuschia Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or 18th century, with an enlargement made around 1880. The original section is constructed from plastered stone rubble and cob, featuring a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The extension is made of exposed, snecked local stone with brick dressings and quoins, and has a similar stack with a slate roof.

The cottage has a three-room plan facing south-south-east. The older part on the left (west) was originally a two-room plan cottage. The larger room on the left, which has a gable-end stack with a projecting oven housing, served as the living room. The small unheated service room to the right is now used as a kitchen. Around 1880, a parlour was added to the right (east) end, set back from the front of the original cottage and featuring a projecting gable-end stack. The building is two storeys high with a lean-to outshut on the right end.

The exterior displays an irregular arrangement of two sets of two windows, featuring late 19th-century and 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The doorway to the older section on the left has a late 19th-century to early 20th-century plank door, while the right section has a late 19th-century part-glazed plank door behind a 19th-century porch.

Inside, the cottage has plain carpentry details where visible. The roof was not inspected, although the bottoms of the straight principals are visible on the first floor. Fuschia Cottage is part of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet of Kingscott.
