Description

Lumpers is a cottage dating from the early to mid-17th century, with an extension added around 1970. The building is constructed from local stone and flint rubble, possibly with some cob, and features cob and stone rubble stacks topped with plastered brick chimney shafts. The roof is thatched.

The cottage has an L-shaped plan, with the main block facing east. It consists of a two-room layout with gable-end stacks, while the 1970 extension, which adds a three-room plan, is located at the right (north) end and projects to the rear. The original cottage is two storeys tall, whereas the extension is single storey.

The exterior displays irregular front fenestration on the main block, featuring three ground floor windows and two first floor windows. All windows are 19th century flat-faced mullion casements of various sizes, containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The roof is half-hipped on the right side and gable-ended on the left. There are two front porches, one on the right (leading into the extension) and another on the left, both with thatched roofs and containing 20th century doors.

Inside, the right room of the main house features only 20th century details. However, the left room retains a 17th century chamfered crossbeam, and the large fireplace has a chamfered oak front frame and includes a rear oven. The three-bay roof is supported by two original side-pegged jointed cruck trusses, although the roofspace is not accessible.

Lumpers is part of a group of attractive listed buildings that contribute to the character of the hamlet of Farway.
