Description
Coxes Villa is a cottage dating to the mid-17th century, with later 19th and 20th-century modifications and a circa-1970 service extension. The main house is constructed of plastered local stone rubble and flint, possibly incorporating cob, with stone rubble and brick stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The extension is faced with local stone rubble and has a slate roof. The original plan was a 2-room cottage facing south-east, with a central entrance into the larger north-east room. A 20th-century stack was inserted into this room, which had been enlarged by removing partitions that originally created a through-passage and two small service rooms. The left room retains an original gable-end stack. A 2-room plan service area is located on the south-west end. The main house is two storeys high, while the extension is single-storey.
The front of the main house has a nearly symmetrical two-window arrangement with late 19th- to early 20th-century casement windows containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. A 20th-century door is set within the doorway, formerly part of a passage. A 20th-century porch shelters the rear doorway. The main roof is half-hipped on the right side and hipped on the left.
The right room contains 20th-century carpentry detail. The left room retains original features, including a fireplace with an oak-framed front incorporating an oven. The fireplace lintel and crossbeam are both chamfered with scroll stops. The roof was not inspected but the bases of straight principals are visible on the first floor, indicating original A-frame trusses.
Coxes Villa is part of a group of attractive listed buildings that form the hamlet of Farway.
