Description

Little Thatch is a cottage dating to the mid-to-late 17th century, which underwent refurbishment in the mid-19th century and modernisation around 1970. The walls are of plastered local stone and flint rubble, possibly incorporating some cob, and the roof is thatched to the main house, with slate to an outshot and tile to a 20th-century extension. The original layout comprised three rooms facing south, with gable-end stacks to the end rooms; the right-hand stack projects, and the centre room originally had a rear lateral stack, now a 20th-century replacement. The central room was originally a dairy or buttery, forming a service area. A single-storey service extension, built around 1970, projects at right angles to the rear of the east end, and a woodstore outshot is located at the right end. The cottage is two storeys high. The front elevation is irregular, with a three-window arrangement of 19th and 20th-century casement windows, featuring rectangular panes of leaded glass, with the first-floor windows having 19th-century Tudor-style hoodmoulds. The front doorway is right of centre and has a contemporary door set within a thatch-roofed porch supported by plain timber posts. The main roof is gable-ended. Although an interior inspection was not possible, it is believed that 17th-century carpentry detail survives, and a 17th-century fireplace with an oak-framed front was noted in the left-hand front room.
