FARWAY FARWAY Millcote

GV II

Cottage. Early C17, modernised with a new extension of circa 1970. Exposed local stone and flint rubble; stone rubble stack with plastered brick chimneyshaft; slate roof, formerly thatch. Plan: 2-room plan cottage built down a hillslope facing east-south-east, say east. The larger right-hand room at the uphill end has a gable-end stack with a newel stair rising alongside. The unheated left (south) room has opposing front and back doorways. The rear door now leads through to a C20 service extension. The main blocks seems to be a single phase C17 small house. It is 2 storeys. Exterior: irregular 2-window front of C20 casements containing rectangular panes of leaded glass. The front doorway is left of centre and it contains a late C19 -early C20 4-panel door behind a C20 gabled porch on plain timber posts. On the right end wall there is a tiny original oak-framed 2-light window with a chamfered mullion. The roof is gable-ended to right and half-hipped to left. Interior: the first floor in both rooms is carried on C19 joists. The fireplace is large and built of Beerstone ashlar with an oak lintel. It has a chamfered surround and it includes a side oven. The roof is 3 bays and carried on 2 original clean side-pegged jointed cruck trusses. Millcote is one of a group of attractive listed buildings which make up the hamlet of Farway.
