Description

Millcote is a cottage from the early 17th century that has been modernised with a new extension from around 1970. It is constructed of exposed local stone and flint rubble, with a stone rubble stack and a plastered brick chimney shaft. The original slate roof was formerly thatched.

The cottage features a two-room plan built down a hillslope, facing east-south-east. The larger room on the right side has a gable-end stack and a newel stair alongside it. The unheated left room has doorways at both the front and back, with the rear door now leading to a 20th-century service extension. The main part of the building appears to be a single-phase 17th-century small house and is two storeys high.

The exterior has an irregular two-window front with 20th-century casements that contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The front doorway, located to the left of centre, features a late 19th to early 20th-century four-panel door behind a 20th-century gabled porch supported by plain timber posts. On the right end wall, there is a small original oak-framed two-light window with a chamfered mullion. The roof is gable-ended on the right and half-hipped on the left.

Inside, the first floor in both rooms is supported by 19th-century joists. The large fireplace is made of Beerstone ashlar and has an oak lintel, a chamfered surround, and includes a side oven. The roof structure consists of three bays supported by two original clean side-pegged jointed cruck trusses.

Millcote is part of a group of attractive listed buildings that make up the hamlet of Farway.
