Description

Three Mariners Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with a later 19th to early 20th century extension. It is constructed of whitewashed local stone rubble, with stone rubble stacks topped with a plastered 20th-century brick thatch roof to the main house and slate to the extension. Originally, the cottage was arranged with a 3-room plan, facing northeast and set end-on to the road. The original section of the house is a 2-room block to the northwest, with an unheated 1-room plan extension set back slightly to the left. A large axial stack backs onto the extension in the larger of the original rooms, while the central doorway leads into this room. The smaller room at the right end has a rear lateral stack, believed to be a 20th-century addition. The cottage is two storeys high. The front has a symmetrical 1:2-window arrangement featuring 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars. The first-floor window of the extension contains rectangular panes of leaded glass. A roughly central doorway to the main block is protected by a contemporary thatched porch, behind which is a 20th-century plank door. There's also a secondary plank door to the extension. The main roof is half-hipped to the right and gable-ended to the left, stepping down from the main block to the extension. Inside, the carpentry is simple where visible. The larger original room has a chamfered crossbeam, and the large stone rubble fireplace features a chamfered oak lintel and an oven. The roof truss is incorporated into the first-floor partition, making the roofspace inaccessible.
