Description
The barn and shippon at Highford Farm, dated 1884, was built by James Berriman. It features stone rubble walls with brick buttresses and dressings in red and yellow brick. The gable-ended slate roof is adorned with decorative ridge tiles. The building has a long rectangular plan, with the shippon on the ground floor and a granary and store at either end, while the barn and machine room are located in the center, with a steam engine housed in a wing behind the right-hand end.
The structure is two storeys high and has a seven-bay front divided by brick buttresses. The first, third, and fifth bays have round-arched window openings that have been reduced in height. On the first floor, the fourth and sixth bays contain doorways, with the right-hand doorway accessible via a large flight of stone steps. Below the central doorway is a wide opening added in the 20th century. A circular datestone from 1884 is located below the eaves towards the left-hand end. There is also a large stone staircase against the left-hand gable leading to a first-floor doorway, with a small room below that serves as a tool-house, featuring an arched doorway at the front.
This building is part of a planned farm developed in the 1880s to 1890s, which was an ambitious project by Mr. Berriman to enhance the buildings and land. The farm is recognized for its decorative designs and carefully planned layout.
