Description
These former stables, harness room, and dairy date to 1889 and were built by James Berriman. The building is constructed of stone rubble walls with yellow and red brick buttresses and dressings. It has a gable-ended slate roof with decorative ridge tiles, and an axial stack of contrasting red and yellow brick. The plan is of a long rectangular building, comprising a dairy to the left, a passageway, a harness room, and stables to the right-hand end. The stables originally accommodated six horses, with two loose boxes and four stalls.
The exterior is ten bays wide, divided by brick buttresses surmounted by terracotta eagles. Plaques are interspersed along the front, displaying the date, the initials J.B., and the function of each part of the building. Windows, with round arched heads and small-paned casements, are set between the buttresses; two first-floor windows towards the left-hand end have been replaced with sash windows. A round-arched doorway provides access to the passage to the left of centre. A first-floor loading hatch is located above the stables to the right of centre.
The interior of the stables retains original fittings, including iron pillars dividing the stalls and partitions with railings above. The building was part of an ambitious 1880s and 1890s farm upgrade scheme by the owner, Mr. Berriman, which included careful planning and decorative designs.
