Description

Barnsley House comprises three blocks, now converted into three separate dwellings, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The house is constructed of painted stucco with three hipped slate roofs and rendered stacks to the side walls. It has double-depth plans. Coped parapets and cornices are present to the exterior.

No. 8, situated on the left-hand side, is a two-storey, two-window range building. It features moulded architraves to the openings, with a 3/6-pane sash window on the first floor, a 6/6-pane sash on the ground floor, and a 6-panel door with a narrow overlight. This block originally served as the service wing.

No. 9, in the centre, is also two storeys and presents a symmetrical three-window range. It includes moulded architraves to the plate-glass windows, with cornices and panelled aprons to those on the ground floor. A projecting enclosed porch features clasping Tuscan pilasters, a modillion cornice, a semicircular arch with moulded imposts, an archivolt with keystone, a fanlight, and double 3-panel doors.

No. 10 is a single-storey, four-window range building. The upper walls incorporate two blind windows, and a 20th-century single-storey lean-to has been added to the front. This block was originally the ballroom, and a concealed painted ceiling remains.

The rear elevations feature coped parapets and cornices, with plate-glass windows and moulded architraves to Nos. 9 and 10. No. 9 exhibits a swept canopy to a verandah, which is now glazed in. The interiors were not inspected.
