Description

Woodlands Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel, built in 1826 with later alterations in the 19th century. The building features painted stucco and has a shallow-pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves and end stacks facing the garden. It is designed in a T-plan.

The exterior consists of two storeys and a symmetrical three-window range on the garden front. The windows are two-pane, two-light casements with shallow pointed-arched overlights and glazing bars that echo the shape of each light. The north entrance front includes two windows on the first floor to the centre and left, with blind windows to the right and in the centre on the ground floor. An enclosed porch with pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course is located to the left.

On the south garden front, there are two shallow curved bays and a swept verandah supported by slender cast-iron columns that extend to the returns. The ground floor features French windows with tall pointed-arched overlights, likely from the late 19th century. The west side of the front block has louvred shutters on the first-floor windows and late 19th-century horned six-over-six pane sash windows on the ground floor, also with similar shutters. A 20th-century conservatory is located at the south-west corner.

Inside, there is a striking circular stair hall with Gothic moulding on the cast-iron balusters, a wreathed handrail decorated with a marquetry motif, and a wreathed curtail step. The door leading to the south block is curved, felted, and studded. The room in the south-west corner features sash windows, a late 19th-century elaborate cornice, a ceiling rose, and a black marble fireplace. A similar room in the south-east corner has a white marble fireplace.
