Description
This is an early 19th-century house, altered in the mid-to-late 19th century, situated in Teignmouth. It is a double-depth plan to the first floor and single-depth to the ground floor. The exterior is painted stucco with a slate roof, hipped to the south and left, and rendered stacks to the right gable end and left. The symmetrical three-bay front is complemented by a later 19th-century single-storey wing with a hipped roof to the left. The projecting first floor is supported by four pairs of hexagonal columns with moulded plinths and caps, and features three curved bays with 6/6-pane sash windows. A six-panel door with raised panel mouldings is flanked by wide, shallow curved bays containing margin-paned French windows with three panes per leaf, each with a pointed-arched overlight. A later 19th-century stained glass window is located in a similar French window on the left return of the wing. The rear, which faces Higher Brimley Road, also features later 19th-century wide bracketed eaves and windows. The interior includes early 19th-century six-panel doors, a staircase with stick balusters and a late 19th-century turned newel. High skirting boards and stained glass depicting the four seasons within the French window of the left wing are also present. The building represents a substantially complete early 19th-century villa, distinguished by the columns supporting the first floor.
