Description

Pound House, located to the south-west of Rill Farmhouse in Buckfastleigh, is a pound house built in 1848, as indicated by a datestone on the adjoining shippon, which is part of a separately listed group of agricultural buildings featuring identical roof construction. The structure is made of local grey limestone rubble and has a slate roof that is hipped at the ends and topped with glazed ridge tiles.

The building is situated on a notably sloping site, parallel to the dairy range, and helps form the track that runs through the farm from the house to the fields. It is built into the slope, allowing for loft access from the ground at the west end. The exterior features three large openings on the ground floor on the north side, providing access from the track, along with a large doorway at the west end.

While the ground floor was not inspected, the loft contains seven roof trusses that match the construction style of those in the dated 1848 stockyard, featuring queen posts with a vertical post reaching the apex. Pound House is part of a well-preserved group of contemporary farm buildings, and the farmstead at Rill is a notable landmark visible from the Totnes Road.
