Dove Barn, To North West Of Rill Farmhouse

Dove Barn, located to the north-west of Rill Farmhouse in Buckfastleigh, is a bank barn that is still partly used for agricultural purposes. It likely predates 1848, which is the date of the other agricultural buildings surrounding the stockyard at Rill Farm. The barn is constructed from local grey limestone rubble and features a slate roof that is hipped at both ends.

The barn forms the fourth side of a courtyard of buildings on a farm situated on a sharply sloping site, with the ground rising to the west of the house. The ground floor, reportedly filled in with rubble, has access from the west, while the loft level can be accessed from the yard.

On the east elevation, there are three blocked ground-floor doorways with timber lintels. The loft doorway on the east side includes a three-light casement and two rows of pigeon holes with flight ledges. Additionally, the loft has a large doorway on the west side from the yard, which features a segmental brick arch. The interior has not been inspected but may hold interest. Dove Barn is part of an unusually complete group of farm buildings, and the farmstead at Rill is a notable feature visible from the Totnes Road.
