Description

The agricultural range located immediately west of Colston Farmhouse is a Grade II listed structure, likely built in the early 19th century. It consists of two adjoining but staggered blocks: a barn with a higher end stable that has a hayloft above, and a stockshed with a hayloft above it. The buildings are constructed from local stone rubble and topped with corrugated-iron roofs.

The layout is aligned roughly with the crosswing of the farmhouse, forming an overall L-plan arrangement. Access is provided from a farm track that runs at right angles to the road and curves around the end of the stockshed to a yard behind the farmhouse. The barn range is situated on a steep slope, positioned below the stockshed.

The barn features opposed doors, with a larger door at the center and a smaller rear door to the left, along with a lean-to shippon at a lower level against the rear side. The stockshed is blind on the track side but opens onto the yard side. The exterior of the barn range includes large double plank doors with strap hinges facing the track, and a small door to the right. The stable on the left has a small door and a loft door above it. At the rear, there is a secondary shippon with a lean-to corrugated-iron roof and five doorways with segmental brick arches. A loft doorway is located in the right return of the barn. The stockshed is set forward from the barn and is built directly off the rock, with footings made of rounded boulders. The yard side of the stockshed features two segmental-headed openings.

Inside the barn, the original hip at the right end has been altered to a gabled roof, and it retains pegged A-frame trusses with butt collars. There is a solid crosswall separating the stable from the barn.
