Description
The farm buildings, comprising three ranges west of Rill Farmhouse, were likely built in 1848, contemporary with a nearby pound house. The buildings form three sides of a courtyard on a farm situated on a steeply sloping site. The ranges include a shippon (cow shelter) to the west, a bank barn with a hayloft built above the shippon to the north, and a building now used as a dairy, originally likely a stable, to the south. The buildings are constructed of local grey limestone rubble with slate roofs, hipped at the ends and featuring glazed ridge tiles.
The bank barn has four ground floor doorways, two outer loft loading doors, and a shuttered two-light window in the centre. Rear elevation alterations include a modern building erected against the rear wall and pockets indicating former drive shafts for machinery. Inside, there are eight queen post trusses with a vertical post to the apex. The dairy, built on a sharp slope, appears impressively tall from the rear. Originally having a stable configuration, the dairy's yard-facing elevation has two windows, doorways, and a newer window, with a central loft loading door. The loft at the right end contains trusses similar to those in the other ranges. The shippon has eight ground floor doorways, three loft windows, two loft loading doors, and a 1848 date plaque with the initials JIE. Its interior features fourteen trusses matching those of the bank barn.
The farm buildings, along with the pound house and Dove Barn, represent a well-preserved example of a mid-18th-century planned farm group intended for stock management. The farmstead is a prominent feature, visible from the Totnes Road. The buildings contain stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
