Description
Colston Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cartshed with a hayloft above, which has been converted into a separate dwelling. It was likely built around 1800 and is constructed of local grey limestone rubble, with parts of the house rendered and colorwashed. The roof is made of asbestos slate, and the stacks have stone rubble shafts.
The building has an unusual layout, with the agricultural building attached to the house at the uphill end. It is an L-plan house that was once divided into two dwellings. The main block faces the road and features a rear outshut and a right end stack. To the left is a crosswing, with the front part used for domestic purposes and an axial stack. The rear part, which was originally an agricultural building, is now a house, separated from the main farmhouse by a cartway entrance. There is an additional agricultural range nearby that is also listed.
The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and has a 1:2-window front, with the crosswing on the left. The ground floor openings feature stone voussoirs. The main block has a recessed front door on the left, which is a 4-panel door with an overlight. There are two ground floor segmental-headed windows with 3-light casements, each having 10 panes per light. The left side of the house has a first-floor 2-light casement with lapped glass, while the rear elevation includes a first-floor 3-light casement with lapped glass. The crosswing has a 2-light first-floor casement with 10 panes per light and is accessed from the left side by a plank front door with a 20th-century porch. The ground floor window on the left is a 2-light casement with 6 panes per light, and there is a first-floor 2-light casement with 10 panes per light. To the left, the former agricultural building has large double doors, and a flight of external steps leads up to a 20th-century doorway with a 2-light window alongside, featuring 6 panes per light. The ground floor still retains one 2-light agricultural window. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
