Description
Thornwood House is a house dating from around the mid-19th century, likely built of brick, with a stuccoed front elevation and rendered side elevations. It features a hipped slate roof with two gabled projections on the front and one on the left side, supported by shaped timber brackets. The house is designed in the Italianate villa style and has a deep plan that is only two rooms wide, with the two main rooms at the front flanking a recessed entrance leading to a central stair hall. The secondary rooms and services are located at the back.
The house is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-bay front. The outer bays have gables designed as open pediments with blind bullseyes, and the right-hand bay is slightly advanced. The central bay is narrower and set back, featuring a porch with Ionic columns, an entablature, and a two-leaf half-glazed front door with margin glazing. The windows are predominantly three-light with semi-circular lights, except for the ground floor window on the left, which is a three-light with square heads, and the first-floor window above the porch, which is a two-light with semi-circular lights. There is a short gabled projection on the left side that matches the style of the front projections.
Inside, mid-19th century features remain, including chimney-pieces, shutters, and a staircase with stick balusters. Thornwood House is an attractive mid-19th century villa situated in a prominent location overlooking the road.
