Description
Higher Thornwood is a small house dating from the late 17th century, with a likely 19th-century addition on the left end. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and features a thatched roof with gabled ends and end stacks on the main range. The main part of the house has a two-room plan, with the hall and kitchen located at the left end, heated by an end stack, and a rounded stair turret at the rear. The left end addition has a one-room plan and is slightly set back from the main range. There is also a small 20th-century lean-to attached to the right-hand end. The house is two storeys high and has a front with one and two windows. The main range includes a central doorway with a thatched 20th-century porch. To the left of the porch is a late 19th-century two-storey canted bay window with four lights, each containing six panes. The two right-hand windows are small pane casements with two lights. Inside, there is a chamfered cross beam with a one-step stop in the left-hand room, and a large fireplace with a timber lintel. One two-light rear window is likely from the late 17th or early 18th century. The roof space has not been inspected. This modestly-scaled late 17th-century house features an attractive rear stair turret.
