Description
The Rectory is a building of circa early 17th century or earlier origins, with extensions dating to circa the early 19th century. It is whitewashed and rendered with slate roofs; the 19th-century range has a hipped roof, while the 17th-century wing has a gabled roof. There are lateral and end stacks to the 17th-century wing, and end stacks to the 19th-century range. The rear wing likely represents part of a three-room and passage range, which may have been used as a service wing. In the early 19th century, the house was extended with a symmetrical two-room block, incorporating a principal front room on either side of an entrance hall, which likely contains the stairs.
The building has an L-plan shape. The front elevation is symmetrical, with three bays, featuring sash windows. A flat-roofed central porch has Doric columns, and a six-panel door is housed within a doorcase with a panelled soffit and reeded jambs. The window above the porch is a 12-pane sash, and the other windows are 16-pane sashes. The rear right wing appears to have been altered in two phases, evident in the changed roofline. One first-floor window has a three-light design with four-centred arches and square-leaded panes.
An inspection in 1985 noted no access to the interior, but a 1949 listing description mentions a staircase with oak treads, turned balusters, and square newels, along with some incomplete cornice mouldings. The rear wing is said to contain a barrel roof, some original joinery, and chimney pieces from the early 19th-century range. The later of the two ranges appears largely intact, and there may be features of interest in the interior of both the rear wing and the front.
