Description

Trumps Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the early 17th century or earlier, with some partial rebuilding likely occurring in the 19th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob and a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, along with a projecting stack at the right gable end and an axial stack. The current layout consists of three rooms wide and single depth, including a rear gabled stair turret and a rear left lean-to. The left-hand end of the house has been rebuilt, making the original plan unclear. The right-hand end contains an early 17th-century room with a rear stair turret.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front, which includes two gabled dormers and a buttress on the left side. The left side has been rebuilt, featuring a doorway at the extreme left, while a second doorway on the extreme right leads directly into the right-hand room. Some remnants of an old wallplate can be seen on the front at the right. The windows are fitted with 2-light casements, each having six panes per light.

Inside, the right-hand room boasts a large open fireplace with one ashlar jamb, a chamfered stopped lintel, and a bread oven. There is one cross beam and one half-beam, the latter featuring run-out stops. The middle room contains a plain beam with mortises that likely supported a former plank and muntin screen. The stair turret has chamfered stopped doorways. Two jointed cruck roof trusses are visible beneath a later roof, and these trusses originally had a threaded ridge and trenched purlins. Trumps Cottage is an attractive early 17th-century or earlier house located near the church.
