Description
Millfield House is a house built around the mid-19th century, with later extensions from the 19th century. It features coursed stone with brick dressings, including quoins and string courses. The roof is slate and hipped, with deep bracketed eaves and a small pediment, and there are brick axial and lateral stacks.
The house has a rectangular plan with a central entrance and a service wing on the right (east) that was extended later in the 19th century. The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay south front. The narrow central bay projects slightly and has a small pediment. There are 8-pane sash windows in moulded architraves, and the central doorway is also in a moulded architrave with a rectangular overlight and a panelled door. A brick porch, added between 1854 and 1862, features a round arch with a moulded extrados, keyblock, and imposts, along with an entablature.
To the left of the ground floor is a conservatory that continues around the left (west) side, featuring glazed polygonal turrets at the corners and margin glazing bars. The rear (north) garden front has three bays, with the right bay being a two-storey canted bay. There is a verandah on the ground floor that wraps around the bay, topped with a tent-shaped glazed canopy supported by ornate openwork piers with spandrels and a lattice frieze. A lower three-bay brick service wing is set back on the left (east) and has a hipped slate roof with smaller sash windows that include glazing bars.
Millfield House is a notable example of an early Victorian villa in the Italianate style.
