Description
Ryde School, formerly known as "Westmount," is an early 19th-century building that served as one of the main residences for the gentry in pre-Victorian Ryde. The structure is two stories tall with an attic and originally featured five windows. It is constructed from coursed stone designed to resemble brick, with ashlar quoins and window dressings. The outer window bays slightly project, creating the appearance of wide pilasters, and have round-headed windows on the ground floor. There is a string course above each floor and wide overhanging eaves, which are interrupted in the center where the front wall rises to form an attic storey. This attic contains one round-headed window with a dentilled cornice and a pediment above it. The glazing bars are intact.
At the center of the building is a tetrastyle Ionic portico with a dentilled pediment above. The garden front is faced with ashlar and features a semi-circular stuccoed portico, now glazed, supported by four Ionic columns with a cornice and iron railing above. Additional wings have been added to the original house to accommodate parts of the school.
