Description

The building at 31 and 32 John Street dates to around 1840. It is a three-storey building with a rendered exterior. It features flanking pilaster strips and a projecting central bay. A first-floor sill course runs along the front, and the roof is a low-pitched slate roof with projecting eaves.

The building has three windows, with superimposed bays on the ground and first floors of number 32. The windows on the upper floors have three lights and sash windows without glazing bars. These are complemented by pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. Later superimposed bays were added to numbers 31 on the same floors. The remaining windows are recessed, with intact glazing bars, and are set within architrave surrounds with block sills on the second floor.

The entrance to number 31 is enclosed by a Victorian porch with a pediment and stained glass. Number 32 has a round-headed doorway, a later recessed door, and a semi-circular fanlight. A heavy slate hood is supported by brackets and flanked by chamfered pilasters, which were added in the second half of the 19th century.

Numbers 31 to 34 form a group.
