Description
The Alexandra Hotel is a public house and three adjoining houses built around 1901. It features red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, gabled at both ends with two central gables on the public house. The building showcases an eclectic late Victorian style.
The hotel has a two-storey design with an asymmetrical window arrangement, displaying a 2:3:2 pattern. The public house, located to the right of center, is symmetrical with three windows and has very deep verges supported by shaped brackets on the two central gables. A central front door is set beneath a porch canopy on brackets, recessed between the walls. There are V-shaped bay windows on either side, which are recessed behind the wall plane of the front elevation and feature colonnettes at the point of the V. The windows are four-pane plate glass sash windows, with the first-floor left and right windows framed in round-headed architraves with keyblocks.
To the left of the public house are two houses that retain their original lean-to porch hoods on timber traceried brackets and original two-pane sash windows. To the right, there is a segmental-headed archway leading to another house, which has an additional two-pane sash window above the arch. The public house has been modernized, but the other interiors have not been inspected. The building is noted for its eccentric early 20th-century design and well-preserved exterior, contributing to its group value with the nearby Starcross pumping house.
