Description
Yard Cottage and the adjoining farmbuilding are located in Higher Ashton and date back to the mid to late 17th century, with the cottage conversion occurring in the 20th century. The structure is built from granite rubble and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends.
The building faces north into the farmyard, with its rear wall adjacent to the road through Higher Ashton, showing evidence of a former main entrance to Place Barton at the west end. The right side of the building is used as a lofted farmbuilding, while the left side has been converted into a cottage.
The exterior consists of a two-storey cottage and a lofted farmbuilding, which includes a large hollow-chamfered doorway. On the right return, a large moulded granite jamb remains, likely part of what was once a granite archway.
The interior of the cottage has not been inspected, but the farmbuilding features a roof constructed with jointed cruck. This building is important to the setting of Place Barton and forms part of the site's perimeter.
