Description
Langdale is a house dating to around 1860. It is located on The Strand, Starcross. The exterior is colourwashed stucco, likely over stone, with a hipped slate roof, deep eaves on curved brackets, end stacks, and two rear lateral stacks with stuccoed shafts and cornices on brackets. The architectural style is Italianate.
The house has a double-depth plan, with two rooms and a central entrance hall leading to the stair. The symmetrical front has three bays, rusticated quoins, and a platband. A central porch has columns and a balustrade with raised panels at the corners. The front door is panelled with circular mouldings and a round-headed plate glass fanlight. There are two-storey canted bays to the left and right, each with a hipped roof and a tall spike on a ball finial. The windows are 2-pane plate glass sashes, with similar sashes above the front door. The left return, facing Staplake Road, has two first-floor and two ground-floor windows, with the two right-hand ground-floor windows being blind; the first-floor windows have moulded architraves. The rear elevation contains a stair window with margin glazing. The interior has not been inspected, but it likely retains features of interest. Langdale is a well-preserved Victorian villa.
