Description
A barn range, largely dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, with some remnants of 16th-century work. The building is located to the south of Coombe Farmhouse. The range is composed of two sections; a long, two-story range to the east with a one-bay lean-to to the far left, and a slightly higher, earlier range to the right. The east section has a large stable door in the lean-to, followed by a pair of wide plank doors over a further door. A small opening, a blocked former doorway with long, thin voussoirs forming a slightly pointed near semi-circular arch, and a doorway with a shouldered head are found on the ground floor of the right section. Upper levels feature two small, shouldered openings set in chamfered surrounds. The far side of this unit has a large, swept-down roof surface above a series of seven plank doors at eaves height, separated by sections of rubble wall. The upper half of the building, in two stories, includes one plank door, a blocked opening, and a plank door with a sidelight to a chamfered wood lintol. The hipped return end has an early plank door set deep within a heavy frame to a wooden arched head, all in poor condition, and is accessed via six stone and tile steps. The rear of this section has three windows, one of which retains the remains of a two-light casement with a wood mullion. A wide plank door is set within a segmental head. A projecting corrugated iron-roofed unit stands at right angles at the junction of the two main sections. The west half of the interior contains a 19th-century King-post roof structure, while the east half is said to have a rebuilt roof. It is a substantial farm building.
