AVETON GIFFORD ASHFORD Tetwell Farmhouse

II

OS Map indicates, wrongly, as Titwell. Farmhouse. Mid C19. Rubble, brick dressings and stacks, slate roof. A symme- trical central hall plan under hipped roof which sweeps down on either side, to left over harness and tack room and to right over dairy. Two storeys and part basement, 1:3:1 windows, all 4-pane sashes to brick arches; centre section has two storeys of windows, and wings with ground floor window only, but also a blind oculus at eaves level, formed from a hoop iron. Central arched doorway with keystone, door set in deep reveals and to fanlight with Y-tracery. Left return has small light at eaves, and at basement level a central plank door flanked by small lights to segmental brick arches. Back as front, but with a lean-to porch and a projecting arm. Small brick stacks to back. Interior: many contemporary panelled doors, including those to cupboards; segmental-headed arch to door under staircase. Stair is circular plan, mahogany handrail, stick balusters, decorative ends to treads, to straight upper landing. Panelled shutters to windows. An unusual but handsome design which remains as built.
